Visit of Duke MD Candidate Zachary Weishampel to the Duke–Ruhuna Collaborative Research Centre
The Duke–Ruhuna Collaborative Research Centre (DRCRC), Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna, hosted Mr. Zachary Weishampel, MD Candidate, Duke University, from 17 October to 19 December 2025.
Mr. Weishampel’s visit was part of the establishment of research study titled:
“Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Prognosis of Leptospirosis and Scrub Typhus among Agricultural Workers Hospitalized for Community Acquired Febrile Illnesses at the National Hospital Galle.”
During his stay at the Duke Ruhuna Collaborative Research Centre, he actively engaged in laboratory and research capacity-building activities. These included the development of Trioplex and Leptospirosis PCR assays, as well as contributing to the development and refinement of Standard Operating Procedures at the Ruhuna Duke Centre for Infectious Diseases (RDCID).
His work contributed significantly to strengthening molecular diagnostic capabilities and standardization of laboratory practices at the Centre, supporting high-quality infectious disease research and surveillance.
The Duke Ruhuna Collaborative Research Centre appreciates Mr. Weishampel’s dedication and valuable contributions and looks forward to continued collaboration in advancing research on febrile illnesses of public health importance in Sri Lanka.
